KONTEKST, an open and polyvocal collective and network of anthropologists, filmmakers, artists and storytellers,
were invited by the Royal Anthropological Institute to curate from their film archives. They are organising a screening on authority and authorship in anthropological filmmaking. The event is taking place on the 24th of April at the Cinema Museum in London with 4 very exciting films that showcase different perspectives. Documenting Presence Through Silence: Re-imagining, Re-constructing and Re-presenting Activist Women's Voices

When the voices of women activists are silenced how might their dissent be heard? Referencing her film Crossing Lines and Braiding Voices (2026), Dr Patricia Francis discusses her offer of an alternative filmic language by abandoning semiotic codes and signifiers. This approach has given volume to the two disparate groups of activists featured in her film: women involved in the 1984-1985 miners' strike, and those involved in the 2016 Black Lives Matter events.

London Palestine Film Festival presents 'Gaza Eyewitnesses', a film by Palestinian artists based on testimonies from Gaza.

This screening is followed by a Q&A with Hossam Al Madhoun, theatre maker, writer and child protection specialist, chaired by Jonathan Chadwick, Director of Az Theatre.

Gaza Eyewitnesses unites diverse perspectives from people in Gaza and captures a broad spectrum of personal stories, situations, and experiences. Palestinian artists present these stories and the mix creates a broad picture of death and life, desperation and irony, horror and humanity. Rooted in Gaza and without knowing where the genocide will lead, the film stands as an everlasting testimony that must not be forgotten to the destructive forces of occupation and war, as well as of the unyielding will to survive.

For 77 years, Palestinian women have carried a double burden of violence, as the oppressive occupation domination intersects with patriarchal control to turn their bodies into contested sites of power, punishment, and resistance. Each day, thousands of Palestinian women cross Israeli military checkpoints on their way to home, work, education, or healthcare, yet this daily necessity becomes an encounter with abuse, humiliation, surveillance, and bodily intrusion. The female body, under occupation, is transformed into a terrain where control over movement mirrors control over land, society, and sovereignty.

Thawra Archive curated programme for LSFF

Thawra Archive has curated a programme for the London Short Film Festival : The Anti-Narrative of a Finished Decolonization: The Colonial Present in Cinema and Sound.

This will take part over two days: on 24 January, at the ICA and on 2 February at ActOne, both in London. The programme will center around people, memories, and movements that continue to shape our world.

"Through film and sound, we explore the Colonial Present, and resistances against imperial violence across time and geography. A journey that takes us from the African continent and Brazil, to Turtle Island, and everlasting struggle in Palestine.

The film programme will be followed by a reflective listening soundscape exploring power of music and audio in service of political cause."

Power Station screening in Falkirk

Power Station has been garnering rave reviews and much traction on the indie distribution circuit. Next stop is Falkirk:

Organised by Polmont Community Hub & Friends of the Earth Falkirk, the screening will be followed by a discussion around power transition - a fun, convivial screening with food!

Inspired by lockdown mutual aid initiatives, artists Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn decided to turn their street into an energy-generating powerhouse – a prototype for a new way of living, with the hope of galvanising a wider push towards sustainable alternatives.

Directed by the duo, POWER STATION charts their turbulent journey, from pitching the idea to their neighbours and sleeping on the roof of their home, to raising finance and launching a bid for a Christmas number one single.

By turns funny and heartwarming, Powell and Edelstyn's film is a vibrant portrait of their local neighbourhood, and a charming testament to the power of art in changing minds about what could be possible.

Beirut's iconic “Le Colisée Cinema” is reopening

The historic Le Colisée Cinema in Beirut, one of the city's oldest cinemas, which was founded in 1945 is reopening its doors thanks to the volunteers at the Tiro Association for Arts (TAA) who rehabilitated five cinemas in Beirut, as well as in South and North Lebanon.

Ken Loach's "lost" films + a retrospective in Autumn 2025

A full season dedicated to the decades-long career of the illustrious filmmaker is kicking off on 26 September at the Garden Cinema.

Amongst the many highlights, audiences will be treated to a screening of little if ever-screened works, censored, suppressed, or generally archived for political reasons. Films that denounce government repression, media complicity, and NGO overreach will be shown alongside an hour-long discussion with Mr Loach himself. Classics will be introduced or followed by Q&As with experts, actors, activitists, including Land and Freedom, Kes, Riff Raff, Cathy Come Home, and others. A screening of the Palme d'Or winner The Wind That Shakes the Barley will act as a fundraiser for the Jenin Cultural Centre, in honour of Ken Loach's longstanding commitment to Palestinian rights and freedom.

Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest Marks 15 Years with Bold Line-Up

Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest has announced the headline screenings for its 15th edition, running 13–21 September 2025 across East London, with screenings kicking off on 14 September.

The festival released the programme on 20 August: "The first film, Niñxs, and closing night, Brigitte's Planet B, bookend a programme brimming with powerful stories, including the incendiary This Is Rockbitch X, alongside a rich schedule of workshops, panel talks, exhibitions, and performances.

On Sunday 14 September, Fringe! opens its screening programme with Niñxs, a joyous, genre-defying coming-of-age documentary crafted over eight years in the Mexican town of Tepoztlán. At its heart is Karla, a teenage trans girl whose life defies expectation: far from tragedy, it brims with punk-parent love, loyal friends, and laughter. Directed by Kani Lapuerta, the film playfully flips the lens as Karla imagines her own future, offering a vibrant portrait of trans youth thriving when supported. Fringe!'s kickoff screening is sweetened by Happy Endings' signature ice-creamy treats.

On Saturday 20 September, the festival presents This Is Rockbitch X, a gripping cult documentary by BAFTA-nominated director Norman Hull. It chronicles the radical British femme rock collective Rockbitch, famed for their pagan rituals and fearless onstage performances. Their audacious challenge to femme sexuality and anarchic wit continues to resonate as a vital act of queer feminist defiance. This Is Rockbitch X screens as part of Potent Portals alongside April Daneau's Iconic and Last Exit on Bethnal by Lydia Garnett and underground club legend Hannah Holland, who will take to the decks for the afterparty.

Fringe!'s closing night on Sunday 21 September features Brigitte's Planet B, a dazzling documentary journey with Brigitte Baptiste — Colombia's celebrated ecologist, public intellectual, and trans icon. Directed by Santiago Posada, the film meditates on the queerness of nature and the diversity that sustains life. From queer Indigenous communities and Amazonian medicines to transgender species and digital animations, the documentary invites reflection on queerness and transness as nature's strategies for survival. Stunning visuals and intimate insight offer a profound encounter with Baptiste, known for pioneering Queer Ecology, leading Colombia's Humboldt Institute, and advocating for biodiversity and trans rights.

The full 2025 programme of screenings, workshops, panel talks, exhibitions, and performances will be revealed at a launch party on Wednesday 27 August at 6:30pm at Rich Mix, with the digital programme going live the following day, 28 August."

From 09:00 CET on Wednesday 20th of August 2025, Indy Film Library is hosting a two-week online showcase, streaming some of the best short experimental films we have received over the previous year.

All the films are available to view here for free. Awards for Best Score, Best Cinematography, Best Film and Best Director will be announced at the end of the second week. Meanwhile, you can also vote for your favourite in the Audience Choice category – the voting form is beneath the films.

2025 Real Utopias festival programme launched

Take One Action is publicly launching the programme for its 2025 film festivals across Scotland today, with the theme of Real Utopias, using cinema as a way to gather together to imagine local and global solutions to some of the pressing issues of our time.

Festival dates are 17-21 September in Edinburgh, with most screenings take place at the freshly re-opened Filmhouse; 25-28 September in Glasgow, with films and workshops at GMAC; 10-12 October in Inverness at Eden Court; and 7-8 November in Dundee at the DCA and Dundee Libraries' Steps Theatre.

The festivals will feature films from Mexico to Kenya via the US, UK and Philippines and will explore ideas from community responses to climate change to trans identity and thriving, workers' rights and speculative futures where prisons no longer exist. We're excited to present the Scottish premieres of creative documentaries Power Station, How To Build A Library and NIÑXS, as well as exploring unions and community organising through Amazon documentary Union and housing justice in Scotland through archive film Red Skirts on Clydeside in collaboration with local branches of Living Rent (more details on these films in Editor's Notes below).

For the first time we have included a grassroots co-programming strand across our festivals - working with groups in different cities to hand over the reins of programming and support screenings that reflect their priorities and interests. Co-programmed events will include films as diverse as ASOG and The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing in Glasgow, Knit's Island in Dundee, and The Miracle on George Green in Edinburgh.

In Edinburgh, we have a short film programme on Dismantling Tech Fantasies, looking at the ramifications of AI and automation. We also have an array of beyond the screen talks and events, including an Imagining A Better Future for the Arts gathering in Glasgow, Radical Library Tours in Dundee and Utopian Zine Making in Inverness.

Meeting of Amazonian Film Archives

Check out this invite to be part of the Meeting of Amazonian Film Archives, a space designed to foster dialogue, learning, and sharing about audiovisual archives, the representation of the Amazon, and its cultural, social, and political impact.

The event is organized by the Riva-Agüero Institute, the PUCP Film Archive, and the Rio Abierto Project, and will bring together filmmakers, archivists, researchers, and communities from Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador.

From May 28 to 30, 2025, we will gather in Lima and online to reflect collectively through panel discussions, film screenings, and specialized workshops.

Reel News/Radical Film Network: In Celebration of International Workers Day

The teams at Reel News and Radical News Network are teaming up to present inspirational films focusing on strikes led by cleaners, healthworkers, and railworkers in Europe.

London videoactivist collective and fellow IMA members Reel News kick off a residency in Hackney with a collaboration with the Radical News Network, as part of the International Workers' Day screenings.

1) "Disinfect your neglect!" Rapid Response team at London hospitals demand end to povery wages (6mins 34secs)

The Rapid Response team at Guy's and St Thomas's hospitals do the very dangerous and skilled job of disinfecting the hospitals after outbreaks of viruses. Without them, the hospitals cannot function - yet they are paid just £12 an hour and have no rest room to sit down or even clean themselves properly The predominately black team have already taken two weeks' strike action; if management don't agree to treat them with the respect they deserve, they will be going on all-out indefinite strike.

2) "In House Now!" Cleaners strike at City St Georges university of London (7 mins 37secs)

Cleaners in the IWGB union on the night shift at City St Georges University of London have had enough - and are taking strike action in classic militant and noisy IWGB style to put an end to their appalling conditions once and for all, and to be brought back in-house.

3) Germany: National public sector strike (13mins 28secs)

Huge national public sector strike, supported by a rapidly growing network of students organising against the far-right, calling for a pay rise of at 8%. Berlin has led the way over the past few years in building militant action led by the rank and file - a process in which the Berlin hospital workers strike in 2021 has been key. Also very important has been the "Berlin Steht Zusammen" (Berlin Stands Together) network, an alliance between students and workers that came out of the previous "Wir Fahren Zusammen" (We Travel Together) network of joint strikes by Fridays For Future climate activists and transport workers.

On the purple trains that run through the rapeseed fields of Skåne, anger is growing. The train company is planning yet another cutback. But this time the train staff are ready to back each other!

For decades of public procurement, companies have competed to win the lucrative contracts to run Sweden's railways. This fierce competition has resulted in worse working conditions for the employees, which has become the hidden competitive advantage. This film follows train drivers and train conductors who, between work shifts and the online meetings of the pandemic, organize themselves in a fight for justice and better working conditions, culminating in a successful wildcat strike. A story of perseverance and solidarity in a time of constant deterioration.
